A caterpillar starts its life as an egg, and then hatches. Later, during its lifecycle, a caterpillar will form a chrysalis (cocoon), and when it comes out, it would have transformed into a butterfly*. Caterpillars will vary in both colour and pattern. A caterpillar's main purpose is to eat as much as it can so that it can transform into a butterfly later on in its life.
